Atlanta, GA – Sept. 19, 2017: The International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) local Atlanta chapter today announced their strong endorsement of Mary Norwood to be Atlanta’s next Mayor. Local 134, Atlanta’s firefighter’s union, is a leading voice for the city’s public safety and the driving force behind nearly every advance in the fire and emergency services in Atlanta.
In making the announcement, Atlanta IAFF President Paul Gerdis said, “The officers and members of IAFF Local 134 are eager to see Mary Norwood become Atlanta’s next Mayor. Mary Norwood has been a consistent advocate for Atlanta fire fighters and safety personnel during her years in public service. Her integrity and record on transparency sets her apart, plus she has a deep grasp of all the issues that impact public safety.”
Norwood’s city-wide knowledge and relationships with individual neighborhoods also factored in the IAFF decision to support her candidacy. “Mary Norwood’s ability to cross lines in each community is a tremendous asset. She genuinely understands and values both citizens and city employees, and she knows that taking care of both is the key to successful neighborhood safety and security. She addresses the issues people care about that impact their daily lives. Atlanta firefighters will benefit from having a Mayor who truly understands the many challenges we confront,” said Gerdis.
Mary Norwood said, “I am proud to have the endorsement of the IAFF Atlanta chapter. As Mayor, I will ensure that the Atlanta Fire Department is the leading fire and emergency services force in the metro area in every way. It’s about putting a premium on public safety — having the best trained personnel in the field, and making sure they feel appreciated and supported so that they can do the job of helping and protecting all Atlantans.”
This is the second key endorsement Norwood has received from public safety employees. In May, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO) local Atlanta chapter endorsed her, as well.
