ATLANTA, GA… With less than three months before early voting begins to elect Atlanta’s next mayor, Mary Norwood dominates the crowded field according to an WXIA-TV Atlanta poll released July 19. Among 18 candidates, 27% of likely voters said they’d vote for Norwood if the election was today. That number is 17% ahead of her closest rival and she ranks first among Democrats, Independents and Republicans. Norwood leads in almost every demographic included in the poll results.
These strong poll numbers validate Norwood’s powerful momentum to win the race and become Atlanta’s second female Mayor. She leads among African American voters with 19%, compared to 15% and 14% for the nearest competitors. 39% of white voters support her – three times more than support the next closest candidate. 38% of older voters support her bid to lead the city. Volunteers from more than 75% of Atlanta neighborhoods are active with her campaign.
“I am proud, humbled and very grateful for the staunch support that so many stalwart residents of Atlanta have for me,” Norwood said. “I am eager to have the chance to work on behalf of all Atlantans.
Norwood is widely acknowledged to be one of the most well-versed candidates in the race and her support underscores her city-wide reputation for being out in front of major issues and getting things accomplished. As a veteran city-wide City Council Member, she has a two-decade record of sponsoring successful solutions for diverse issues, from over-budget water and sewer projects to public safety and juvenile justice reform, zoning, development and greenspace challenges, and creative approaches to affordable housing and homelessness.
“Voters have confidence in me to tackle crime, public safety, affordable housing and transportation. They trust me do what I say I will do. As Mayor, that’s what I’ll do for the future of our great city.”
The WXIA-TV poll is the second indicator in recent weeks that underscores her appeal with citizens. She recently announced that in just nine months, she has raised over $1,000,000 in contributions for her Mayoral campaign, 94% of which came from individuals within the metro area, and 85% from within the city limits. For the period ending June 30, donors gave her campaign over $330,000 with robust financial support from voters in every council district in the city. The WXIA-TV poll shows that likely voters are inclined to put their vote and their dollars in Mary Norwood’s capable hands.
The media also recognizes that Norwood is broadly capable. She was recently named as one of Atlanta’s most powerful and influential individuals in government and business according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Norwood is on the 2017 Power 100 annual list of Atlanta’s 100 most influential people of 2017, as selected by the Chronicle’s editors, and one of only 18 women so designated. The list highlights individuals that are known for making positive things happen for the City, including titans of Atlanta industry, public officials wielding political clout, and individuals leading civic institutions and highly effective non-profits.
